Wendell's Wonder Formula
Below, we are including a diet that was created by Cheeks and Squeaks for hamsters with teeth problems that require a soft mushy food. One condition that can cause this in hamsters is called Hydrocephalus. This condition is the buildup of fluids (water) within the brain. This causes pressure on the brain's tissues. This can cause teeth problems (brittle teeth), respiratory problems, abnormally shaped faces (bulging eyes, shortened snout), and neurological issues. Another condition that hamsters may have that can cause them to need a special diet, is called Brachycephaly. Brachycephaly, known to humans as flat-head syndrome, is a condition that causes a shortened snout. There are many breeds of animals that were bred to have this flat-faced condition, such as bulldogs, Boston terriers, Scottish fold cats, Persian cats, and Netherland dwarf rabbits. Hamsters can have either Hydrocephalus or Brachycephaly, or they can both. Unfortunately, many view these animals as cute and unique without understanding that these conditions are disabilities that often lead to a lifetime of health problems. Many hamsters found with these conditions are often bought at pet stores (breeding mills) but there are many that purposely choose to breed these "hydro hamsters" for their looks.
Taken from: Cheeks and Squeaks
This supplemental feeding can also be used for pregnant hammy moms, elderly hams, young pups, or any ham that may need help keeping weight on.
