What does "no-kill" actually mean: It means the organization has a placement rate of 90% or higher. This does not mean they do not euthanize animals. Euthanasia is considered a last resort, when an animal is suffering from a medical or behavioral condition. The decision to euthanize is applicable when it is in the best interest of the animal's quality of life.
Kill shelters are typically public organizations that are required to take in any and all animals that come to them, unlike private organizations that can regulate their intakes. There are no restrictions and animals can be dropped off/surrendered at any point in time. These "open door" shelters are unable to keep up with the demands of their community and due to lack of space, time, and resources, this leads to euthanizing healthy, well-behaved animals. When there is no available space or if an animal doesn’t get adopted by a certain amount of time, their solution is to kill. |
